This will be my first year choosing One Word for the year of 2014. This idea of One Word was inspired to me by Teressa of Window on the World, who in turn was inspired a few years ago by Melanie at Only a Breath. Melanie is offering a blog button template (see mine to the left who chose One Word to ‘reflect’ on for the upcoming year. Melanie, (gasp for breath) was inspired by Alece at OneWord365 The goal is to brainstorm a single word, or ‘theme.’ As Alece puts it on her website:
Forget New Year’s Resolutions/ Scrap that long list of goals you won’t remember three weeks from now anyway. Choose just one word. One word that sums up who you want to be or how you want to live. One word that you can focus on every day, all year long. It will take intentionality and commitment, but if you let it, your one word will shape not only your your, but also you. It will become the compass that directs your decisions and guides your steps. Discover the big impact one word can make. One word. 365 days. A changed life.
So, the big question….why did I pick Health as my One Word for 2014? Well, 2013 was not the greatest year for me health wise and and every aspect of my life suffered from it. That’s not fair to them and certainly not fair me. And my health has been getting worse over the last few years. After becoming pretty ill at the end of 2013 and ringing in the New Year from a hospital bed, I decided I needed to focus on my health. For so many reasons more than me. Health is defined in the by the Merriam Webster dictionary as the condition of being well or free from disease. I am very behind on posting on my blog, but I have been striving towards towards health since I cleared by the doctor. It’s different this time than other times I said I was going to strive for health. I need my health to be successful at life, and I realize that now. I have a gym membership, am working with a personal trainer, who is also having me keep a food diary (which he reviews). I found a great a great counselor to help with the emotional and spiritual part of my body and make me healthier their. I’ll keep you updated with my progress with my #lifetimejourneyforhelf #selflove #weightloss #musclegain #changeforlife #iwillbehappy Sorry those are all more than one word, but they have been the hashtags I have been using!

…but what about #Giving Tuesday?!?
What is #Giving Tuesday? Tomorrow, communities will comes together - charities, families, businesses and individuals to transform the way people think about, talk about, and how they participate during the giving season. It’s simple really – find a way for you, your family, your company, or your organization to join in acts of giving.
As a fellow friend blogger, Teressa Morris put it “Giving Tuesday is not a charity to donate to, but a call to action. How can we give back and focus on “the reason for the season” instead of the glitz and gifts?”
There are many partners involved, but here are few:
- American Red Cross
- United Way
- St. Jude Children’s Hospital
- Give Forward
- PetSmart Charities
- Christopher House
So what can you do to on #Giving Tuesday? Here are some fabulous ideas!
- Make a donation to the charity of your choice
- Donate a bag of kibble or other supplies to local animal shelter
- Donate to a food bank
- And remember, your don’t need to be rich to participate. I’m sure you have some clothes and jackets you don’t wear anymore because they don’t fit. Why keep them, donate them so someone can put them to good use.
- And finally, spread the word! Have a facebook and twitter account? Of course you do! Share this blog post! Or at share that it’s #Giving Tuesday (don’t forget the hash tag on twitter) and have family and friends participate too!
To find out more information about #Giving Tuesday and how to get involved with a charity, head on over to www.giving tuesday.org
For my part, I have three large bags of clothes that no longer fit that I am going to donate. In addition, I am going to look into volunteering.
This post was inspired by a post by Teressa Morris, please check out her post on “Giving Tuesday: A New Way to Celebrate the Holidays on her blog Window on World, which I love, I am sure you will too!
Day Four – Seeds of Thankfulness
“Enter His gates with Thanksgiving and His courts with praise; give thanks to Him and Praise His name.” – Psalm 100:4
I am thankful for my wonderful family.
I am thankful God brought Jon and I together; he is my soulmate, my best friend, my lover, my friend, and my companion in life. He loves me, flaws and all, for who I am. He cares for me when I am sick, comforts me when I am upset, protects me. I am thankful for what God has blessed us with, and for our two wonderful german shepherds, Zeke and Zihna. Our family may not be conventional, but it is our family, and within it love abounds.
What are you thankful for today? Please join me on this journey in celebrating 30 Days of Thanksgiving by leaving me a comment telling me what you are thankful for today!
