First, sorry for the disappearing act, and second, let me explain.  Since March, I have been struggling with multiple medical issues, and of course, a few of them ‘came to a head’ at the same time.  It’s been a very intense experience.  To sum it up, I have had a series of three procedures over the past four weeks to try to help alleviate my severe back and leg pain, and last week I had a procedure to remove a kidney stone I could not pass.

Day 2: Do you still sleep with a stuffed animal?

As I mentioned in Day 1, one of my childhood special stuffed animals – my teddy bear. But, no he does not sleep with me, there isn’t enough room in the bed (not to mention I’m afraid the dogs might mistake him for a toy – yikes!) so my teddy bear stays safe atop the guest bed.  So, no, I do not sleep with a stuffed animal.  When I need my teddy bear, he is still there though, to console me.  Instead, I like pillows, fluffy blankets, and of course, my pups.  Zeke (my older German Shepherd) loves to cuddle at night; Zihna (my younger, higher-drive German Shepherd, not so much).  Zeke will cuddle for hours, he loves it – he’s such a bum!

Day 3: Which would you rather have: a super-soft pillow or a warm, fuzzy blanket?

Well, I would choose both, both I suppose that defeats the point of the question.  I guess as long as I have pillows, I am good to go – they don’t have to be super-soft.  But I love warm, fuzzy blankets.  For just being two of us in the house, we have so many blankets (I think most of them could be classified as warm, fuzzy blankets).  I think the whole warm, fuzzy blanket thing is about comfort.  I have a new little nephew, who is just over a month old, and he likes being swaddled.  My husband asked why would a baby want to be wrapped up like that, and I explained that being wrapped up well in a blanket gives the baby a feeling of security and a feeling of being back in the womb.  I think as adults, warm, fuzzy, blankets give us a similar feeling of security and comfort.

Day 1: Did you have a favorite stuffed animal or lovey as a child?

To start, I love stuffed animals.  Growing up, I had many stuffed animals.  Even as a teenager and a young adult, I still collected stuffed animals.  I have now since given away and donated much of collection, keeping only the ones that have are truly special to me.  I will however, find myself purchasing a stuffed animal once in a while (but now I will only get one if it has meaning, e.g. a german shepherd with proceeds going to a good cause).

When I was a very young little girl, I had a small stuffed elephant I would carry around everywhere with me.  Actually, I still have him, tucked away safely with my other valued mementoes from the past in my keepsake/memory chest.  I don’t remember ever naming my little elephant, he was just my elephant, and very special to me.  You could wind him up and he would play music… I can still hear it in my mind, but he doesn’t do that anymore.  When I was about four or five, I accidentally dropped him in toilet, and my parents tried to wash him in the washer.  All of the water broke the mechanisms that made him play music  So tragic, I know.  He also used to be really, really soft, and after that incident, he started getting pills on him.  But none of that stopped me from carrying him around everywhere. I think once I started kindergarten, I stopped carrying him around so much.  But my little elephant brought me comfort.

Even though I was an only child, I had lots of cousins (my mom had three sisters and four brothers, so we have a large extended family on my mom’s side), and when I younger, my grandma would give each of us grandkids a small Christmas present every year.  When I was eight or nine (I think) Grandma gave me a teddy bear for Christmas.  This teddy bear became very special to me over time, and became my favorite teddy bear.  I would sleep with him every night, and he would console me when I was upset.  Just like the elephant, I never gave my teddy bear a formal name, he was just my teddy bear.  As the years went by, he became more and more special…even as a teenager and an adult I admit taking my teddy bear with me on overnight trips.  I still have him, and now instead of sitting atop my bed, he sits atop the guest bed.  You can tell he’s been comforting me for years…his stitching is starting to come apart and his leg being partly held on by a safety pin.
